Choosing the Right Avatar Offroad Storage Box

Trying to choose your box from the largest off-road storage lineup on the market? With multiple sizes and now two different depth options, there’s a lot to choose from.

Whether you’re looking at a Niko, Mega, or Giga Storage Box, you can now choose between our standard-depth and slim-depth versions. So how do you decide which one is right for your van?

The answer really comes down to how you use your space.

Do you want to maximize the amount of gear you can carry? Or would you rather keep the back of your van a little more compact and leave extra room for accessories like a hitch-mounted bike rack?

Let’s break it down.

Standard Depth:

Maximum Storage, Maximum Capacity

If your philosophy is “if I have the space, I might as well use it,” the standard-depth boxes are a great fit.

Our standard-depth Niko, Mega, and Giga Storage Boxes are designed to give you as much usable storage as possible in each size.

That extra depth means more room for the things that tend to take up space on an adventure: recovery gear, tools, camp equipment, outdoor gear, spare parts, and all the other essentials that are nice to have along for the ride.

More room for bigger gear

Sometimes you simply need the extra space.

The standard-depth boxes give you additional capacity without having to jump up to a larger overall box. If you’re building your van around carrying a lot of gear, that additional volume can make a big difference.

The Giga, for example, gives you serious storage capacity when your priority is carrying as much as possible. The Mega offers a great balance of size and versatility, while the Niko is a more compact option for adding substantial storage without going all-in on a larger box.

A great choice for dedicated storage

Standard-depth boxes are also ideal when you have a specific type of gear you want to keep outside the living area of your van.

Think bulky equipment, larger tools, camp supplies, or gear that you’d rather not have taking up valuable interior space.

If your van has the room for it, why not put that space to work?

Choose standard depth when your priority is maximizing storage capacity and making the most of the available space.

Slim Depth:

More Clearance, Same Secure Storage

Sometimes, though, storage isn't the only consideration.

Maybe you already have plenty of room inside your van. Maybe you’re running a hitch-mounted bike rack. Or maybe you simply want to keep the rear of your van as compact as possible.

That’s where the new Slim Storage Boxes come in.

Available in the Niko, Mega, and Giga, the Slim versions give you the secure exterior storage you want while reducing how far the box extends from the back of your van.

It’s a simple change, but it can make a big difference depending on your setup.

A great match for hitch-mounted bike racks

One of the biggest advantages of the Slim design is the additional clearance it provides around the rear of the van.

If you’re running a hitch-mounted bike rack, having a little more room between your storage box and your rack can make for a much cleaner setup.

Instead of having to choose between exterior storage and your favorite hitch accessories, the Slim gives you another option.

Keep things compact

The Slim is also a great choice if you spend a lot of time navigating tight parking spaces, garages, trailheads, campsites, or anywhere else where vehicle length matters.

Reducing the depth of your storage box means less extending off the back of your van.

You still get a secure place to carry your gear—you’re just choosing a more compact profile.

Choose slim depth when clearance, accessory compatibility, and keeping the rear of your van compact are higher priorities than maximum box volume.

Add a Crown for Even More Versatility

Want to take your box a step further?

Pair your Standard or Slim Storage Box with a Box Crown.

The Crown is an open-top storage topper designed to give you quick-access storage above the box. It’s especially useful for gear you want to carry outside but don’t necessarily need locked inside the main storage compartment.

Think firewood, fuel cans, dirty or muddy gear, or other bulky adventure essentials.

The open design makes it easy to load and unload larger items, while the Slim profile helps maintain that more compact setup at the rear of the van.

It’s a great example of how you can build your storage system around the way you actually use your van.

So, Which One Is Right for You?

There really isn’t a wrong answer.

The standard-depth boxes are for maximizing the storage potential of your van. If you have the room and want to carry more gear, the additional depth gives you more usable capacity.

The Slim boxes are for those who want the benefits of exterior storage while keeping the rear of their van more compact. They’re especially well suited to setups with hitch-mounted bike racks or anyone who values additional clearance.

And because both options are available across the Niko, Mega, and Giga, you can choose the combination of size and depth that makes the most sense for your setup.

Standard Depth

Choose it if you want:

  • Maximum storage capacity

  • More room for bulky gear

  • The most storage from the available footprint

  • Dedicated exterior storage for larger gear

Slim Depth

Choose it if you want:

  • A more compact rear profile

  • More clearance around hitch accessories

  • Easier pairing with a hitch-mounted bike rack

  • Less depth extending off the back of your van

  • Secure exterior storage without maximizing box depth

And if you want even more versatility, add a Slim Crown for easy-access storage on top.

At Avatar Offroad, we don't think every van needs the exact same storage setup. That's why we've built one of the most extensive off-road storage lineups available—with different sizes, configurations, and now different depths—so you can build the setup that works for your adventures.

Maximum capacity or maximum clearance? Standard or Slim?

Now you get to choose.
